Using the Arduino Microcontroller
First thing you need to know are the different types of chips there are. Here is a list:

Arduino Leonardo
Once you master the UNO, you can can go to the Leonardo, probably the next in terms of difficulty. This requires soldering to use. However, it does seem that a strong glue gun could be used instead.
